I ordered a portrait made of Sra. Ypia.[1] [Olimpia]
[1] Olimpia Rizal de Ubaldo (1854-1887) elder sister of Rizal. She was with child when Rizal, newly minted physician, returned to the Philippines in 1887. Rizal assisted at the delivery, the baby died and so did Olympia on September 22, 1887. Rizal addressed his elder sisters with respect, their names/nicknames preceeded by “ñora” or “Señora.”

[1] Rizal is comparing his 1888 departure with the tearful parting of May 1882, his first trip abroad, when he drew a silhouette of Manila as the steamer sailed off to Europe.

[3] Manuel de Yriarte (1864-1930) a friend of Rizal, whose portrait as a young man was painted by Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo in Paris in 1885, was educated in Europe and upon his return to Manila later served as Director of the National Museum, and chief of protocol in Malacañang to American governors-general. As Palace Rigodon Master, he collapsed on the Malacañang dance floor and died the next day.
