Dapitan, P. I., 22 November 1893

MR JOSE MARTOS O’NEALE

Manila

MY DEAR SIR,

Through the Politico-Military Commander of the District I received your letter of the 27 October in which you asked for my authorization in writing to reprint the Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas for the purpose of refuting some of my annotations.

Appreciating such a nice procedure on the part of an adversary, I have the honor to inform you that I consider myself very much honored by your attention, and although I believe that you only intend to refute some of my annotations, I find however no inconvenience whatever in your reprinting the entire work, first, in order that it may be understood better, and then because in the free republic of letters, the broadest power should be conceded to true adversaries.

Awaiting anxiously your refutation and regretting my inability at the present moment to honor it with a just defense of my opinions, I remain your very attentive and most affectionate servant who kisses your hand,

JOSE RIZAL
