We arrived at 11:30 AM leaving Moscow in the rain at I0:00 AM on a twin engined Ilyushin.

Weather in Leningrad [sun?] was out and temperature about 55 °F.

The monument of the encirclement.

Tour of the City of 100 islands, 65 rivers and 600 bridges.

In the afternoon, the Fraternal Cemetery for about 600,000 dead both soldiery and civilians, then the Battle Cruiser Aircraft Hermitage and the Winter Palace and Romeo and Juliet ballet at 7:30 PM. People waving and clapping in the theater and waited for us at the entrance.

And Leningrad’s White Night which started June 1st and ends June 22.

Eerie, haunting as you can read at midnight.

Strange feeling of hushed reverence in a heroic city of violence—

1825—Decembrist revolt of the nobility

1905—First Revolt

1917—The October Revolution of Lenin

1941-44—The longest siege with history of 872 days

Casualties—about a million
