August 23, 1970

Have just come from the house of Gene de Gracia on the 1st Anniversary of the Republic Magazine where I had dinner. Imelda has just come from the Jack Andersons and [Teodoro] Doroy Valencia to the Locsin collection, the Cultural Center and the Nayon Pilipino.

Florante Caedo has about finished my bust and is starting on the children specially Bongbong who leaving is soon.

Played golf at Fort Bonifacio with Gens. [Romeo] Espino and [Rafael] Ileto with the pro Vic Allin coming along to give pointers. Cured my defects which was principally a right turning of my hands on the upswing and a collapse of the left arm on the downswing.

Loafed around—long afternoon nap (one hour and a half) then started to see the creditable movie of the 1967 six days war between Israel and Egypt and other Arab countries when Caedo arrived and I was told of the Republic anniversary.

Finalized with Dir. [Fernando] Busuego the deciding factors for conflicting oil concessions: the best program of exploration and development and the most reliable foreign partner tied by contract.

Official Gazette for August 23, 1970: President Marcos concentrated on desk work. In a memorandum circular to all heads of departments, bureaus, agencies and other instrumentalities of the government, the President warned government officials and employees that he would impose severe penalty, including dismissal from office, on those who would violate his orders against the use of smuggled products.
The President said in his circular that government men, especially those at the top, must set the example in the continuing drive against the use of smuggled goods.
Enjoining the cooperation of private citizens in the drive against the use of smuggled goods, the President emphasized that “traffic in smuggled goods cannot endure if our citizenry voluntarily desisted from buying, possessing or using smuggled products.”
